[SEEING] Switzerland was a one month intensive drawing and travel course through Switzerland and its surrounding region. The intention of the course was to activate the mind through travel and productive drawing that enhances the awareness and shifts students from observation to complete engagement in the built environment. With a focus on strictly drawing, their growth was exponential and their capability of [SEEING] through drawing became more perceptive as they immersed themselves in their surroundings and daily life.
The Progression of experiencing unknown territory - new environments and cultures - allowed the students to stay focused and harness their [SEEING] potential. For the first time in their education, some were working through full scale spatial relationships; attempting to convey what they experienced through plan, section, and perspective. Through time, reflection and repetition of making drawings, each student began to recognize subtle shifts in scale, details, materiality, and light. The built environment was seen not through drawing every visible edge and surface but capturing a particular quality to convey the experience.
In only four weeks, all 16 students were able to not just [see] a place or building but capture the essence and quality of it - [SEEING] architecture through their drawings. |
