Rackham
The following materials are submitted to the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies:


Rackham Application
Complete the online admissions application.

Non-refundable Application Fees
The fee for United States Citizens and those with permanent resident visa status is $60. The fee for non-U.S. citizens is $75.

The application fee is paid online, via credit card, before the application is submitted. The application is submitted electronically to the program of study and the Rackham Graduate School. There is no need to follow-up with a paper copy of the application or an additional application fee.

Applications received without fees will not be processed.

Records/Transcripts
One set of official final undergraduate and/or graduate academic records/transcripts, with your degree posted. Official documents must be provided from the institution awarding the degree. It is your responsibility to request the release of any such records from the institutions involved. If you have a foreign transcript, you must include an official English translation of each transcript and a copy of the degree certificate or diploma, also translated into English.Non-U.S. citizens only, if you have a foreign transcript, you must include an official English translation of each transcript and a copy of the degree certificate or diploma, also translated into English.

Doctoral Program
The following materials are submitted to the Doctoral Program in Architecture via the online Rackham application.

Statement of Purpose
Two page statement of purpose describing the research that you anticipate pursuing if admitted to the program. The ideas should be clearly, well stated, and specific. Describe your qualifications to undertake this research and reference your own or others related work if appropriate.

Personal Statement
The Personal Statement should be a concise, well-written statement about how your personal background and life experiences, including social, cultural, familial, educational, or other opportunities or challenges, motivated your decision to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Michigan.

Letters of Recommendation
Three (3) are required and should testify mainly to academic and professional capacity and promise. Letters should be substantive statements from academics and professionals familiar with your abilities and accomplishments. Electronic submission of recommendations is preferred. You will be prompted to register recommenders using the Rackham online admissions application, enabling recommenders to submit letters of recommendation electronically to the Doctoral Program in Architecture.

Do NOT send paper copies when submitted electronically.

Examples of Work
Submissions should support the applicant's statement of purpose and clearly demonstrate research and writing abilities. These may consist of published articles, papers, portfolio or other writing samples.
*M.Sc./Design applications require a portfolio.

TOEFL (required)
Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency. The TOEFL is required of all international students. (except those who have received a degree from an institution where the language of instruction is English.)

The minimum TOEFL
scores are:

560: paper-based

220: computer-based

84: internet-based

Applicants are urged to take the TOEFL & GRE as early as possible and must request the scores be sent to the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor using

GRE Scores (required)
An official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Score Report, sent from the Educational Testing Service, is required of all students.
