spring break internships
TCAUP sponsors a one-week unpaid internship for the week of spring break for students interested in learning more about the practice of architecture.
THIS OPPORTUNITY IS AVAILABLE FOR CURRENTLY-ENROLLED U-M ARCHITECTURE, URBAN DESIGN, AND PLANNING STUDENTS ONLY.
When is it?
The next Spring Break Internships will take place during the 2007 U-M Spring Break.
Where is it?
Some typical placement cities include:
- Ann Arbor
- Atlanta
- Boston
- Chicago
- Denver
- Detroit
- Los Angeles
- New York
- Philadelphia
- San Francisco
- Seattle
However, you may request a placement in any city in the U.S.
You are responsible for...
- Traveling expenses to and from the city of your internship
- Living expenses for the week
- Transportation from the place you stay to the firm and back
What will I do?
Each experience is different but you may:
- Sit in on staff or client meetings
- Go to construction site visits
- Help with working drawings
- Build a model
- Meet with a partner to discuss the firms work
- Shadow an architect
If you are interested:
- Decide where you would like to go
- Fill out the application form [see above]
- Attach your one-page resume
- Turn both documents in to Beth in the Dean's office or email to her at berenter@umich.edu.
What happens next?
Applications are sorted by city, then letters are sent to firms in that city asking them to host a student. As firms contact us to accept an intern, we will match you with a firm. You will receive an email to tell you the firm and ask you to confirm the placement.
Consider this opportunity carefully. Once you are confirmed with a firm, you cannot back out.
Once you have been placed:
Do some research on the firm, so you are familiar with their work. You should also call the firm to introduce yourself, determine your expected time of arrival Monday morning, ask for the name of a contact person, and find out what materials (if any) you should bring.
After the Internship...
- Write a thank you note to the firm
- Give a copy to Beth
- Fill out an evaluation
- Add the internship to your resume!
