January 2005 found the charretters studying Detroit's Eastern Market. The market was established as an open air farmers' market in 1841. Today it serves food wholesalers, processors, and distributors located in the area and functions as a site for tailgating by Detroit Lions' fans. With help from a $100,000 Cool Cities Catalyst Grant, the Eastern Market Reinvestment Strategy has been put into action. Additional funds are currently being assembled and work will begin soon on substantial renovations of the market's historic sheds.
At the invitation of Kate Beebe, president of the Greater Downtown Partnership, Detroit Design Charrette 2005 focused the energy of some 90 professionals and students on Eastern Market and the surrounding area. Building on the nature of the market as a place to buy and sell food, the teams encouraged stakeholders to consider expansion into a greater variety of food-related activities. Urban agriculture, community and demonstration gardens, experimental horticulture, culinary education, vocational training in food service, processing, and safety, microbreweries, bakeries, and restaurants-all of these would improve the market's economy, enhancing the area's future viability and eventually attracting new residential development. |
