Growing Hope hosts a tour of local efforts to improve Ypsilanti residents’ access to healthy, affordable food.
It’s well established that eating fresh fruits and vegetables has many health benefits, including protecting against heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. But what do you do if the closest source of fresh produce is several miles away, and you don’t have a car, or your limited income only allows for a grocery trip once a month? For many years residents of Ypsilanti faced this exact dilemma every day.

Many efforts over the last few years have been improving access to healthy, affordable foods including a new Downtown Farmers’ Market, a new downtown grocer, the development of over 10 community gardens in the last 3 years, and increased efforts from existing stores to make healthy, fresh food more accessible. The Tour de Fresh will exhibit these efforts, beginning at the Downtown Ypsilanti Farmers’ Market and visiting several community and school gardens, two local food stores, and a local food bank distribution site.

The Tour de Fresh, Growing Hope’s Ypsilanti Food System Tour will begin promptly at 5:30 pm at the Downtown Ypsilanti Farmers’ Market and end at 8pm at the Ypsilanti Senior Center with a delicious meal of local foods. To reserve a spot on the Tour we ask for a donation of $1 to $40. For more information go to: http://www.growinghope.net.
