AATA Adds 8,000 Annual Service Hours
AATA adds 8,000 annual service hours The Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (AATA) and the University of Michigan announced last week the addition of 8,000 annual hours of AATA bus service designed to improve service starting this week. The service changes and additions are being added as a result of AATA's MRide Program agreement with U-M. The MRide agreement allows all active U-M students, faculty, and staff to ride AATA fixed-route service without paying a fare by showing their yellow or white MCards to the drivers. Update on wireless problems - Tuesday 1/18
Since the beginning of the Winter semester we have seen a handful of wireless access points "freeze" and stop providing connections to the Internet. Computers with wireless cards still unavoidably "associate" to these APs, because they are still powered up and broadcast themselves as access points, and users could see "Good" or "Excellent" signal strength reported, but it wouldn't be possible to get an Internet address or a connection. On Windows machines a "Low or limited connectivity" message appears in these cases.
The problem was first reported last week and ITCom remotely reset the identified access points to fix the problem. When the problem reappeared over the weekend and Monday ITCom came on-site Monday and Tuesday afternoon. Diagnosis is still in progress -- similar access points in other areas don't show a problem, nor did we see this last semester. ITCom will be back on Wednesday afternoon with a group of people to monitor the access points while studio is in session.
Until the problem is resolved wireless users may have not have connectivity in some parts of the building while things will work fine in other areas. This can vary from one end of studio to the other, or floor to floor. The problem is not in the computer and the Help Desk won't be able to resolve it by working on the machine. It is useful to contact the Help Desk and provide the location, as specifically as you can, where you were unable to get a signal-at this stage this can help identify APs with problems. Users who have registered their wired connections should be able to plug into the wired network, which isn't showing these problems.
ITCS "Do Not Spam" option now available
ITCS has announced two approaches it is taking this term to control spam:
Do Not Spam List (available for any @umich.edu address) ITCS has purchased access to published lists of IP addresses of known spammers, open relays, and open proxies from the Mail Abuse Prevention Service (MAPS). Users who choose to do so will be able to block mail originating from the IP addresses on these lists for their own e-mail address and for the addresses of directory groups that they own.
You can turn use of the list on or off at this URL (click the "Sign Up/Manage Do Not Spam List" link; login with uniqname and UMICH Kerberos password is required):
Content Filtering for Spam This opt-in service, available within the next month or so, will allow users to have suspected spam messages delivered to a designated folder in their mailbox rather than to their INBOX.
Do not spam blocks any message if it is from one of the listed addresses. Content filtering analyzes the content of the message and identifies mail with a high statistical probability of being spam. This mail is still delivered but into a separate mailbox, not your INBOX. You can then review this mail before deciding to delete it.

BEAL AVENUE CLOSED THIS WEEK
Beal Avenue between Bonisteel Boulevard and NC16 (parking lot north of ATL building) is scheduled to be closed this weekend to repair an underground line. The closure is scheduled from 6 am Saturday (Jan. 15) through 8 pm Sunday (Jan. 16). Access to the Bentley Library and NC16 parking lots only will be available from the south from Fuller Road.
Additionally, during the next two weeks, smaller excavations may occur along Beal Avenue between Fuller Road and Hayward Avenue. If a lane closure is required, construction staff will direct traffic with flagpersons.
1/10/05 -- 3rd floor Center and West wireless problems [FIXED]
This problem was fixed 1/11 by 10:30 am
Reported late this morning, two of the third floor wireless access points (APs) that cover the center and west sections of the studio are not allowing traffic through to the Internet. Computers in this area with wireless cards may still show "Good", "Very Good", or "Excellent" signal strength from these APs but will be unable to obtain an IP address and no software that accesses the Internet (Internet Explorer, e-mail, IM, access to TCAUP Storage or printers...) will work. This problem has been reported to ITCom and is expected to be repaired tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.
Wired access to the Internet -- connecting via an ethernet cable to one of the 8-port network devices on most studio columns -- is not affected by this problem. We recommend that both wired and wireless adapters be registered with the Help Desk -- these are separate networks and a problem that can affect one network may not affect the other. Those who have already registered their wireless cards should complete the registration form (http://www.tcaup.umich.edu/helpdesk/netreg.html) , providing the information for their ethernet card. Those who have never registered their machine should complete the web forms and then visit the Help Desk to confirm your security settings. For those who need them, ethernet cables are available in the Media Center -- a 14' cable for $3.50.
FLAGS AT HALF STAFF
Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today ordered that United States flags throughout the state of Michigan and on Michigan waters be lowered for one day, on Monday, January 10, 2005, in honor of Staff Sergeant Jason A. Lehto, of Mt. Clemens, who died December 28 while on active duty in Iraq. Flags should return to full staff Tuesday, January 11.
(As a reminder, the Presidential proclamation to lower the flags this week expires today at sunset.)
Winter building hours
The Art & Architecture building will be open M-F, 7:00 am - 10:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday, 7:00 am - 7:00 pm. Access outside these hours is possible using your M-Card in the building's exterior card readers.
New Media Center Opens
The New Media Center is open for business. Winter term hours will be Monday through Thursday 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Extended hours will begin later in the term, including weekends.
New products are available including Yogurt, Naked Fruit Juice, Vitamin Water and Ramen Noodles. If you would like the Center to stock other food or supplies please do not hesitate to contact Brenda Snyder at blsnyder@umich.edu or complete a suggestion box slip.
New Campus Computing Site opens
The Art & Architecture Campus Computing Site has re-opened in room 2109 as of Wednesday morning, 1/5. Campus Computing Sites, for those new to the University, are deployed and managed in locations throughout campus (http://www.umich.edu/~sites/) by the University's central academic computing organization, ITCS. These Sites are provided with a substantial set of software (http://www.umich.edu/~sites/software-list.html)* and are open to all University faculty, staff, and students. The Art & Architecture Building has housed a Campus Computing Site since 1989; it has been closed this past Fall to allow for substantial remodeling.
The portion of the Site in 2109 will contain just Windows machines. In conjunction with the remodeling, the School of Art & Design has converted its Macintosh classroom in 2114 into a complementary portion of the Site, featuring just Macintosh computers; this is also available now. During the Winter semester the software in the Macintosh section will still be managed by Art & Design (their software set is quite rich); Sites will provide their Macintosh loadset in the Spring. In both rooms, logins will be the usual uniqname/password combinations and access to the spaces will be controlled by swiping M-Cards through the installed card readers. The Sites can be reserved for classes and will not be accessible during these times; this will be particularly true of the Art & Design portion in 2114 which has regularly scheduled classes. Please check for a posted class schedule outside each location. Charged-for printing will be provided in the Site with charges supported by each faculty, staff, and student's UMCE printing allocation (students - 400 free pages/term; faculty and staff - 50 free pages/term; $.08/page above these limits).
The opening of the Campus Computing Site is the last major phase of the building renovation that included the creation of a new Media Center, lecture-sized enhanced classroom (1227), remodeled computing labs (BETLAB, Doctoral Lab, MUPLAB) and offices, a new studio (MiSO), research facility (Spatial Analysis Lab) and two newly enhanced classrooms (2210, 2108). While this major piece is now finished, work will continue in the coming months on smaller projects in these areas and to further expand services available to College students, faculty, and staff.
