Facilities + Operations Update
Security Measures for Spring Break
If you are leaving town during the upcoming spring break, please help reduce emergencies and maintain a safe and secure environment. Students, faculty, and staff should complete the following before they leave their work, research, or living areas for the week:

+ Close and lock all outside windows, fume hoods, and offices to prevent broken pipes and thefts.
+ Secure valuables, lock desks and closets, and close window blinds or drapes.
+ Turn off all unused appliances, including coffee pots, heaters,
computers, printers, copiers, and lights to avoid over-heating and reduce electrical usage.
+ Make sure all chemicals are properly capped and research operations properly secured while unattended.

Beal Closed February 26-28
The north block of Beal Avenue between Bonisteel Boulevard and Hayward Avenue is scheduled to be closed Saturday through Monday (Feb. 26-28) to repair an underground pipe. Access to the NC24 lot, GG Brown loading docks, Lot NC60 (blue and gold parking), and the Lurie circle drive will maintained.

Weekend U-M bus service will not be impacted. However the Monday Commuter bus route will be re-routed onto Hayward and will not serve the bus stops at the Bonisteel Interdisciplinary Research Building and Cooley Building.

AATA Bus Schedule Change
The time schedule for AATA's Route 12UL Liberty-University will be altered beginning February 28. Although the times will change, the 12UL will continue to operate along its current routing. For more details, visit AATA's web site at www.TheRide.org or call (734) 996-0400.

Get Naked and Plot Yourself
The TCAUP Media Center is now offering a wider selection of great beverages including:
  • Naked Fruit Blends [$2.50 each] Strawberry Banana/Vitamin C, Berry Blast, Green Machine, Mighty Mango, Power C, Protein Zone, Well Being, Red Machine, Blue Machine
  • Fruit 2o [$.80 each] Natural Grape, Citrus Energy Blast, Berry Relaxing, Tropical Immunity
  • Arizona Tea [$1.00 each] Ginseng, Green/Ginseng, Regular with Lemon, No Carb
    Blueberry
  • Milk [$.80 each] whole, 2%, and chocolate
Now that you're feeling full of vitamin-enriched health and vitality, what could be better than a stroll over to the new self-serve plotter to take charge of your own large format destiny in startling full color or black and white on 28 lb. bond. See the message below for more details!

New walk-up plotter in Media Center
The Media Center is now offering access to the same high-quality plotter they use -- the HP DesignJet 800PS -- on a walk-up basis. Plotting in black-and-white or color is available on 36" 28lb bond paper at 25% off regular plotting prices.

A computer attached to the plotter provides the complete College software set but will not have any specialized fonts laptop users have installed. The recommendation, as it is for regular Media Center plotting, is to generate a PDF file from your application and plot that. This ensures that any fonts, or images that are linked, are included with your document. [Remember that the Adobe Creative Suite, which includes Acrobat Professional, as well as PhotoshopCS, IllustratorCS, InDesignCS, and GoLiveCS is available to students (only) at an extremely attractive price through the Computer Showcase - <http://showcase.itcs.umich.edu/catalog-item.php?id=525>]. Plotting on other papers (high-gloss, vellum...) should still be directed through the normal Media Center plotting service.

      Marketscore Spyware-Take the Test
All faculty, staff, and students received a message earlier this week from the University's Information Technology Security Services warning about Marketscore. The concern is described in Marketscore's own "Privacy Statement"; once installed, Marketscore monitors all of your Internet behavior, including both the normal web browsing you perform, and also the activity you may have through secure sessions, such as when filling a shopping basket or filling out an application form that may contain personal financial and health information. Marketscore's proprietary and patent pending technology allows us to see the details of secure pages

So, all sites you visit, all secure transactions (credit-card information, banking, WolverineAccess, your uniqname and password...), every message you type on e-mail, and every download or upload, are all captured and readable by Marketscore. This is a serious personal and institutional security problem.

Take the test to determine if your machine has Marketscore installed

If the results indicate Marketscore may be present, you can download Spybot-Search and Destroy to remove it or visit the Help Desk (1-4 M-F) for assistance. After February 21 any computer on the University networks that has Marketscore installed will no longer be able to access the Internet. If you have Marketscore, you don't want to wait that long.

Further information is available on the ITSS site. Contact the Help Desk (caup.help.desk@umich.edu) if you have any questions.

Introducing FYI: Current Information for the TCAUP Community
TCAUP's new FYI weblog at http://www.tcaup.umich.edu/fyi/ is an information resource for students, faculty, and staff, that collects bulletins and updates from a variety of College services such as the help desk, facilities, media center, and more and displays them in a single convenient location. In the past, this type of information has typically been distributed in group emails. FYI improves on group email by keeping all the messages in one place, and archiving them for future reference. What's more, each message posted to the FYI page has an email link icon. Click the icon and you can forward that message, via email, to whomever you wish.

In the coming weeks, the TCAUP FYI pilot group will finalize guidelines for posting messages to the page and invite additional members to join the group. Watch for further updates on this progress at http://www.tcaup.umich.edu/fyi/.

If you have any questions or comments about TCAUP FYI, send a message to karbogas@umich.edu. If you are wondering what a weblog is, visit http://www.blogger.com/tour_start.g.

Fiery color printing now available in A&A Campus Computing Site (2109)
Campus Computing Sites has added the ability to print from the Windows machines in 2109 to the Fiery color printer next door in the College's Media Center. Select "Art & Architecture Media Center Fiery..." when printing a job; it will be routed to the Fiery where it can be previewed and printed.

As a reminder, the A&A Campus Computing Site, one of a number of Campus Computing Sites across the University http://www.umich.edu/~sites/hours/, is divided into two rooms -- 2109 has 18 Windows machines, 2114 (in the middle hallway) has 18 Macs. Both are available to all University faculty, staff, and students via card reader whenever scheduled classes are not using the space. Please check for a schedule posted near the door; 2114, in particular, is regularly used for classes. As a Campus Computing Site computer problems in 2109 (machine won't boot, bad mouse, problem with black-and-white printers in 2109...) are reported to the Campus Computing Sites group rather than the local TCAUP Help Desk; signs posted in 2109 describe the steps. Other requests or comments on the Site can always be sent to caup.help.desk@umich.edu.

      Update on wireless, 2/3
To follow up on the wireless problems described 1/18 (in the blog below) ITCS could find no specific cause for the failure of a handful of access points to provide Internet access just after break. Since their visit, over the past two weeks we've been taking our own daily survey of the College wireless network but have found only one problem, early in this process, and it has been fixed. Tomorrow will be our last daily survey; we will begin a twice weekly schedule and then move to once weekly if things continue to work well. Please contact the Help Desk (caup.help.desk@umich.edu) if you are experiencing problems with the wireless network.

Also this week, ITCS is working on its post-installation wireless survey. By measuring signal strengths as they walk through the building they match coverages they find now with the coverages expected when the building was surveyed before installation. Tuning of the access points based on this information will help provide the best coverage; this tuning could involve changing antennas, the strength of the access point's signal, or even locations but at this point they are not reporting finding many significant problems.
