Worm mail
There's a round of worm mail that's shown up in the last two days, purportedly from "administrator@mail.umich.edu", "service@mail.umich.edu" or some other official sounding address, and with subjects like "Notice of account limitation" or "Account Alert". The message text warns you about some problem with your e-mail account and advises you to open an attachment for further information or to complete a form. The attachment, a Zip file, contains a worm that infects Windows machines (Macs are not affected) and the message(s) should be deleted.

While the University filters e-mail for worms and viruses there is often a small window between the time a worm is first released and the filters are available for it so some can get through. The message text in a worm message is designed to get you to open the attachment and it can be very clever about this. As most are aware the "From:" field in a message is easily spoofed -- you can't rely on it indicating the true source of the message. The body of the message can usually give some indications -- awkward phrasing, misspellings, bad grammar -- if read carefully. Because worm mail is automatically generated it's often possible to Google for parts of the message -- the Subject: line, a characteristic phrase -- and see whether the same message has been received by others and particularly whether there are links to any of the anti-virus sites (Sophos, Symantec, Network Associates...) indicating the message carries a worm.

Be very careful when deciding whether to open an attachment. Because of the obvious risks of spoofing, no security provider, including the University, will send out account forms or security updates this way. If you've received such a message and inadvertently opened it, or if you've received a suspicious message and are not sure whether it's legitimate, please contact the caup.help.desk@umich.edu or stop by between 11-1 (M-F) and we can advise you.

3rd floor East computer cluster down 7/19 6:00 pm-7/20 10:00 am
The 3rd floor East computing cluster will be down from Tuesday (7/19) at 6:00 pm to Wednesday (7/20) at 10:00 am so that it can be shifted a few feet west to provide space for the construction of a new student lounge. Computers will be removed from the cluster beginning Tuesday evening in preparation for the move; the cluster work should be back in operation by Wednesday morning. The West cluster will remain available until Summer Discovery begins at 9:30 am.

Art Fairs Near Campus
ART FAIRS NEAR CAMPUS
The annual Ann Arbor art fairs again will greatly impact our campus streets and business operations. No significant changes are anticipated this year from last year except for Thayer Structure parkers, who will access the structure via the entrances/exits on Thayer Street.
This year's fairs will be held July 20-23. Washington Street between Thayer and Fletcher will close for set-up on Monday (July 18) at 9am. U-M permit holders will be allowed through the barricade to access the Thayer Structure.
The remainder of the impacted streets will close Tuesday (July 19) morning for set-up. Art fair hours will be Wednesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Ann Arbor Street Art Fair will surround Ingalls Mall for the third year. Ann Arbor's South University Art Fair will extend along both South and East University. The Guild Summer Art Fair will continue along Main and State streets, while the State Street Art Fair returns to the East Liberty area.
For the second year, Parking and Transportation Services will provide the M-Art Line, a shuttle service from the Glazier Way/Huron Parkway parking lot (NC51). U-M permit holders will continue to have regular access to the lot. M-Art Line riders will pay $5 per vehicle to park. During daytime fair hours, the bus service will be provided by the regular Commuter route. However, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, when the summer Commuter route normally does not operate, the M-Art Line buses will provide 15-minute service around the northern portion of the Commuter route -- from Glazier Way to the stops at Washington/Fletcher and C.C. Little. Visit www.transportation.umich.edu for details.
Several streets that run through or next to campus will be closed beginning Tuesday morning -- East Washington from State to Fletcher (closed Monday at 9am)
-- South State from Washington to Monroe
-- South Thayer
-- North University from State to Fletcher
-- South University from State to Washtenaw
-- East University from South University to Willard
-- Church from south of the Church Street parking structure (525 Church St) to Willard
-- East Liberty from Main to State
-- Maynard from East Liberty to south of William
-- South Thompson -- half a block south from East Liberty
-- South Main from Huron to William
The listing below outlines daily operational details that have been planned in order to continue services to the campus building occupants in the areas of the art fairs:
- Booth locations -- in addition to the traditional fair locations, the Street Art fair new location (now in its third year) will provide artisan booths along Washington Street in front of the Frieze and Rackham buildings, along Thayer by the Modern Languages Building and Hill Auditorium, along North University in front of the Kraus Natural Science and Chemistry. Food vendors and entertainers will be located in Ingalls Mall on the west side of the Michigan League.
- Road closures -- Though Thayer will be closed to through traffic, access for emergency vehicles and deliveries to Kraus will be maintained along the west side of Thayer as will access for hotel guests at the Bell Tower Hotel. Fletcher Street will remain open.
- Parking structure/lot access -- the Thayer Street parking structure will remain open to University permit holders via the Thayer Street entrances.
Two surface parking lots will not be available for normal parking -- lot W18 (Thompson Street surface lot) and lot C10 (the small surface parking lot by West Hall).
During the art fair days, all University parking structures will remain gated to only allow vehicles with appropriate University permits to enter. After 3:30 p.m. weekdays and all day Saturday, special event parking permits also will be sold at the structures where adequate vacancies occur.
- University mail deliveries -- Campus mail deliveries to many central campus locations will be maintained, though reduced to once a day. Mail deliveries for occupants of the 715 North University and the Modern Languages Building will be consolidated at the Frieze Building. Burton Tower will be consolidated at the University Productions office in the Michigan League. The Cashier's Office at 777 North University will have two deliveries daily.
- MStores -- Deliveries from MStores will occur before 8am each weekday or delayed until the following week. Check with an MStores customer service representative for specific details.
- Vendor deliveries to the Chemistry Building -- the Chemistry Building loading dock will remain open as will the intersection of Fletcher and North University.
- DPS assistance -- DPS officers will be prepared to assist Art Fair staff with traffic and access at the intersections of Washington and Thayer as well as Thayer and North University.
- Transit bus routes -- U-M transit bus schedules will follow traditional "art fair" routes, which include relocating the State Street stop west to Division and the South University stops to Hill. Alternate route maps can be viewed at www.transportation.umich.edu.
Questions or comments about service issues should be directed to the appropriate department. General questions about issues pertaining to the art fairs can be directed to Jim Kosteva at 763-5554 or jkosteva@umich.edu.

Construction Update-Road Closure

3G1 orientation follow-up
Help Desk Hours

The Help Desk will be open today (7/1) until 4:00 pm to register as many people as we can before the holiday. Next week we will be open 11-1. There will be a sign posted on the Help Desk with this schedule.

Network Registration

Windows users do need to come to the Help Desk (2107A) to finish the network registration process. The primary reason is to confirm the machine has both Service Pack 2 and an active anti-virus program installed but it also allows us to confirm with you that both your wired and wireless connections are up and running when we're done. This check isn't needed for Mac users at this point; Mac users submitting registration forms will get their network access no later than the beginning of the next business day as we add their information to the registration database. Mac users are certainly welcome to stop by the Help Desk and we can also confirm for them that their connections are up and running. We don't send an e-mail confirmation when a registration form is received because of the need to also see the majority of the machines at the Help Desk to complete the process.

The most important technical part of the form is the "Network Address". The most common problem seen on the forms has been either to leave that piece blank or to use the same Network Address number for both the wired and wireless forms. If there is a problem with the form we will send an e-mail response.

Printer installation (Windows):

The best strategy for adding the College printers is to use "Add a Printer", select the "A network printer..." button, then, in the next screen, select the middle button "Connect to this printer (or to browse...) and, in the "Name:" box below enter:

\\tc-print
This should bring up a list of available printers. The printers to select are the Xerox WorkCentre Pro 35 printers whose names begin "DSEAST", "DSWEST", or "DSCENTER", the Xerox printer named "3rd floor Self-Serve color", and the "Fiery X12". The "Fiery EX2101" is a different printer than the "Fiery X12".

If a printer list does not appear after entering \\tc-print\ it is most likely due to firewall software running on the computer. Please see the Help Desk about the best way to allow just the connection to these printers through the firewall.

Temp Storage

The Temp Storage volume isn't accessible from home. This is because it is non-authenticated (ie. you don't have to log in) and making this kind of guest storage available more widely tends to attract material from users outside the College. Your 1 Gb IFS space is accessible from home (or anywhere else in the world you happen to be) via mFile or using an sftp program (for Mac users Fugu is downloadable here and for Windows users SSH is downloadable here.

To access Temp Storage from within the building:

Windows: Right-click on "My Computer", select "Map Network Drive", and enter "\\141.211.160.48\temp storage".

Mac: Select "Connect to server" under the "Go" menu and enter "afp://141.211.160.48", login as "guest" and select the "Temp Storage" volume.

Windows users in the A&A building (except in the Campus Computing Site) can also access the server by entering "\\tcaup-storage" on the Address line at the top of any folder view window, then selecting the "Temp Storage" icon.
