Construction Traffic UpDate
CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC UPDATE - No elevators in Glen Ave. Parking Structure Saturday - Ann Street re-opens Oct. 3 - Pedestrian path from Murfin to NC diag to re-open Oct. 3 - Fletcher Parking Structure east entrance from Palmer Drive to be closed Oct. 6-11 For more details, see below.
GLEN AVE PARKING STRUCTURE ELEVATOR SHUT-DOWN The elevators in the Glen Ave. Parking Structure are scheduled to be out of service Saturday (Oct. 1) 8am to 4pm in order to install utility lines. Additionally, the gate arms will be locked in the up/open position. The structure will remain available for parking. ANN STREET TO RE-OPEN MONDAY The one-block closure of Ann Street between Glen Avenue and Zina Pitcher Place is scheduled to be complete this weekend allowing through traffic as of Monday (Oct. 3). Construction will continue on the north side of the block for the new Ann Street Parking Structure and on the south side for the completion of the Biomedical Science Research Building. Therefore, please use caution when traveling through this area. PEDESTRIAN PATH TO NC DIAG OPENS MONDAY The pedestrian path from Murfin Avenue to the North Campus Diag on the north side of the Charles R. Walgreen, Jr., Drama Center (WDC) is scheduled to re-open Monday (Oct. 3). As a result, the crosswalk across Murfin Avenue will be relocated north of the intersection with Duffield. A new raised crosswalk is scheduled to be installed Oct. 17-18. With deliveries of materials continuing at the WDC site, pedestrians, drivers and bicycle riders should use caution when traveling through this area. FLETCHER STREET PARKING STRUCTURE ACCESS REDUCED The east entrance/exit for the Fletcher Street Parking Structure off Palmer Drive is scheduled to be closed Oct. 6 at 6am through 6am Oct. 11 to repair the pavement. The project was rescheduled from its previous dates due to the recent closure of Washington Street. The Fletcher Street Parking Structure will remain available for parking, but access will be restricted to the Fletcher Street entrance/exit. Since the card reader for the structure is at the east entrance, those needing access via swipe cards will need to relocate to the neighboring Palmer Drive Parking Structure or the Thayer Parking Structure. This work will not impact Palmer Drive nor the Palmer Drive Parking Structure.
Repaired -- wireless login problem 9/28
The problem with failed authentications has been repaired; the wireless network is again available.
Wireless login problems -- Wed. 9/28
There are problems authenticating to the wireless network this morning, at least as of 9:15 am. The normal wireless login page will display but valid uniqnames and passwords are rejected so wireless network access isn't provided. This has been called in for repair. The wired network is not affected by this problem.
Power Outage on South Campus
This is our final update. At this time, all power has been restored to the buildings involved in the outage. Temporary repairs were made today and a permanent repair is being planned. Unfortunately, the permanent repair will require another shutdown of the power. Plant Operations will be in touch with building managers to assist in planning the best time for this shutdown -- most likely later this week. I believe most, if not all, of the computer systems in Plant Operations are back up and running. The POCC is in the process of returning to normal operation at this time. Thanks to everyone for your patience with us today! Jim _____________________________________________ From: Vibbart, Jim Sent: Monday, September 26, 2005 1:18 PM To: PlantOps-All; facilities-users-network@umich.edu Subject: FW: PLANT FYI - Power Outage on the South Campus The power outage continues on South Campus. The problem has been located in the substation located behind Revelli Hall on a feed from the Central Power Plant. Crews are working to make emergency repairs and they hope to restore power by 4 p.m. this afternoon. We have done our best to communicate this information to people in the buildings without power. The POCC remains in operation, however, most people who work in the Plant Building (and the other buildings involved) do not have functioning computers. The Plant Operations web site is out-of-service, as well. Once power is restored, it will take us some time to return everything to normal operations. For the most current information regarding this outage, please call the POCC at 7-2059. Jim
Power Outage on South Campus
Due to a problem at the Central Power Plant, several buildings on the south end of campus are currently without power. The list of buildings we know of at this time is as follows: IM Building, Plant Building, Weidenbach, Hartwig, Crisler Arena, Revelli Hall. We also have spot outages at North Hall, Medical School, Health Service that we're investigating at this time. The POCC continues to operate, albeit with extension cords powering lights and without computers. My understanding is we cannot expect power to be restored to these building for at least one hour. Crews are actively trying to determine the cause for the failure and methods for restoring power. We'll send an update to you when we have more information. Please realize that many people who would like this information have no computers available to them at this time. I appreciate anything you can do to pass this information along. Use your printing allocation from your laptop
It is possible to use the 400 page/semester printing allocation, available to students as part of the Basic Computing Package, from student-owned computers by using mPrint. mPrint provides a web interface that allows you to select a printer in a Campus Computing Site (for us, that would be the "Architecture" printer, located in the A&A Campus Computing Site in 2109) and submit a job in a manner similar to that used with CTools. It's simplest to send the files to be printed as .PDF files but the system will also take plain text or files that are first printed to disk as Postscript (generating .PS files). Jobs sent there would be printed immediately and the page counts deducted from the initial 400 page allottment. The A&A Campus Computing Site is open 24x7.
Fiery printer now available from A&A Campus Computing Site
Campus Computing Sites has now made it possible to send jobs to the Media Center's Fiery color printer from the 18 Windows computers in the A&A Campus Computing Site (Rm. 2109). The printer is listed as the "Art and Architecture Media Center Fiery...". Once submitted, the job, as with other jobs sent to the Fiery, can then be viewed in the Media Center and approved for printing. This installation does not change the funding arrangements; Campus Computing Sites does not provide an allocation for jobs sent to the Fiery.
Wireless problem of 9/14 1:00 pm - resolved
ITCom has resolved the problem that prevented some from getting Internet addresses when using the wireless network. All users of wireless should now be able to get valid IP addresses and access the Internet.
Wireless problems Wednesday 9/14 1:00 pm
Since ~1:00 pm today (Wednesday, 9/14) several students have reported they can not get an IP address using wireless and so have no Internet connectivity. This has been called in and we are waiting for a repair engineer to contact us. Wired network access, for those who have registered their machines using the online form or at the Help Desk, is not affected by this problem.
Bicycle registration on North Campus Thursday
Thursday (Sept. 15) at the North Campus EnergyFest at the North Campus Portico Plaza. Registration will be paid by DPS. Simply bring a University ID and the bicycle to the DPS table. Otherwise bicycle owners should register their bicycles at the Ann Arbor City Hall and the fee is $6.50.

Rhino arrives at A&A Campus Computing Site
Rhino is now available on the 18 Windows machines in the A&A Campus Computing Site (Rm. 2109). Until 4am (Tuesday 9/13), when the Sites machines are next re-booted and updated, students wishing to use the software may need to power the machine off and back on to have the software installed -- hold down the power button on the center of the machine chassis until the machine shuts down, then press again to restart; the installation takes <5 minutes during the boot process. After 4am (Tuesday, 9/13) all machines will have the software available.
This is the latest Rhino version (3.0 with Service Release 4 and the Bonus Tools); the additional add-on applications (Flamingo, Bongo, etc.) aren't included. Once installed, Rhino will be found in the same program listing as AutoCAD 2005 -- under the "Programs" listing on the Start Menu in "GIS applications".
