11/17 - 3rd floor wired network problems resolved
As of Thursday, 11/17, we believe the problems with the wired network on the 3rd floor have been resolved. Since initially reported 11/10, the wired network would show a loss of Internet connectivity over an area running from one studio up to an entire section (East studios or West studios, for example). If the network switches were restarted, the problem would clear for a period of time, usually several hours, but then reappear. Wireless connectivity, which is not connected to the wired network, would continue to work. This pattern suggests the wired switches may have been vulnerable to a network worm so that after a period of normal operation a worm-infected computer would find the switch, attempt to install the worm, and end up shutting the switch down. We have hardened the switches against this kind of attack and none of the switches have gone down since this was done.

Please let us know if there are any additional problems with network connectivity on the 3rd floor.

Flags to half-staff Monday 11/21
Governor Jennifer M. Granholm ordered that United States flags throughout the state of Michigan and on Michigan waters be lowered for one day on Monday, November 21, 2005, in honor of Army First Lieutenant Justin S. Smith of Lansing who died November 7 while on active duty in Iraq. Flags should return to full-staff Tuesday, November 22.
First Lt. Smith, 28, was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol in Baghdad, Iraq. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Carson, Colorado.
When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the United States flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.

Ticket sales, sublets, moving sales, etc. on College e-mail groups
In advance of the Ohio State game there have been a handful of ticket requests sent to College student e-mail groups but this is not the best place for them. Ticket requests, sublets, moving sales, and other similar commercial transactions -- offers to sell or requests to buy -- are best handled through the University's Marketplace site (http://marketplace.umich.edu) rather than e-mail. College e-mail groups are established primarily to support communication related to students' academic mission in the College. Marketplace was established to join University buyers and sellers without involving e-mail groups, groups where the great majority of members will neither have what you want or buy what you have and for whom the e-mail is spam.

There are currently dozens of buy/sell items on Marketplace now for Ohio State tickets so please post these requests there.

Thanks.

11/10 - 3rd floor wired network problems; DSWEST printer affected
There is currently a problem with the 3rd floor wired network that has, over the last two days, caused large portions of it to stop working. As part of this problem, the Xerox printer near the West computing cluster (DSWEST) becomes unaccessible when its network connection goes down; the East and Center printers have not been affected.

This problem was first seen yesterday and cleared, but was reported again this morning, cleared, and has returned. We are investigating the cause. The wireless network is not affected by this problem and we have not had problems reported from the 3rd floor computer clusters.

STATE STREET REDUCTIONS AT WEILL HALL
Construction of the new Weill Hall for the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy (at the State and Hill intersection) has required the closure of the parking lane on the east side of State Street between Monroe and Hill streets. This closure is scheduled through the end of February.
Additionally, occasional lane shifts for State Street vehicle traffic will be required when the construction crane is operating. Please observe all parking space closures (as marked with bags covering the parking meters) to assist with tight traffic lanes.
DTE GAS LINE PROJECT TO IMPACT SEVERAL CAMPUS STREETS
A new DTE gas line will be installed through the end of the year from Fifth and Madison streets to South University and East University. Work is scheduled to begin the week of Nov. 14 along Madison Street between Fifth and State streets. The installation on Madison will take place along the north side of the street between the sidewalk and the curb, thereby closing the sidewalk and parking spaces. The construction equipment may extend into the westbound driving lane on occasion.
During Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 24-27), two streets are scheduled to be closed and others narrowed. Madison Street is scheduled to be closed at State Street and Tappan Avenue is scheduled to be closed at South University. State Street at Madison will be reduced to one lane with flagpersons directing two-way traffic.
Details regarding work scheduled in December will be shared at a later date.
THAYER REDUCED FOR CRANE
The precast concrete panels forming the outside walls of the new 202 South Thayer Building are scheduled to be hung November 15 through December 2. Most of the work will be contained within the existing fenced area. However, work on the building's east side will require moving the fence into Thayer Street for two days; specific dates have not yet been scheduled. Flagpersons will be on site to maintain two-way traffic on the one traffic lane during the two-day period.
Additionally, the Thayer Street parking structure is scheduled to be closed for one day November 25. Drivers who need to park in the area on the day after Thanksgiving will be directed to the Fletcher Street parking structure.
SOUTH BLOCK OF ZINA PITCHER TO OPEN TO TWO-WAY TRAFFIC
The south block of Zina Pitcher Place (between Ann and East Huron streets) is scheduled to be open to two-way traffic beginning November 17. The north block, between Ann and Catherine streets, will remain one-way northbound.
Drivers traveling south on Zina Pitcher will be required to turn right (west) on Huron Street. No left-hand turns onto Huron/Washtenaw will be allowed.
Please use caution when driving, walking or riding in this area until drivers become adjusted to the new traffic patterns.
Additionally, the sidewalk on the north side of Huron Street in front of the new Biomedical Science Research Building (between Zina Pitcher and Glen) is scheduled to be open Nov. 17. The sidewalk on the west side of Zina Pitcher is scheduled to be open Nov. 21.
ANN STREET TO BE CLOSED WEEK OF NOV. 21
In order to dismantle a construction crane, Ann Street between Glen and Zina Pitcher is scheduled to be closed two days during the week of November 21.
BEAL AVENUE REDUCED THROUGH SUNDAY
Beal Avenue north of Bishop Street (between Northwood II and IV) is scheduled to be reduced to one lane today (Nov. 9) through Sunday (Nov. 13). Two-way traffic will be maintained while city construction workers install water main replacement valves.
