Friday, 6/30, fire alarm
Construction work being done on the first floor in the School of Art & Design set off the building fire alarm shortly after 5:00 pm; grinding to finish the cement floor produced enough dust to set off one of the smoke detectors. The grinders expect to finish their work by 6:00 pm.
NEW PARKING PERMIT YEAR BEGINS SATURDAY
The new parking permit year on campus begins Saturday (July 1). Permit holders with hang tags or static clings should begin using the 2007 permits at that time.
Permit holders who now use a Blue or Yellow automatic vehicle identification (AVI) device will continue to use the same device and should have received a postcard indicating the new amount of their automatic payroll deduction beginning this month. Additionally, physicians with Gold AVI permits automatically have been renewed and those participating in the Gold lottery have been contacted regarding the results.
To obtain a new parking permit, please visit the Parking & Transportation Services office located at 508 Thompson Street. Office hours for the next week will be 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Please note the office will be closed on the 4th of July. www.pts.umich.edu

Card readers—July 4th, 2006
Tuesday July 4th has been programmed into the access control system as a holiday. The definition of a holiday in the system is midnight to midnight.
Notice that this means that Monday is not being treated as a holiday. The impact to your unit is as follows:
Art & Architecture: Schedules are used for unlocking of doors and local alarms, not for access rights. Your doors will not unlock and will be alarmed on this holiday; cards will work as on non-holidays.

JULY FOURTH TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING CHANGES
Transit Services
U-M transit services, including the Commuter and Northwood routes as well as the Health System shuttles, will not operate on July 4. Additionally, the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (AATA) will not operate regular fixed-route bus service, A-Ride paratransit or senior taxi services that day. All regular bus and paratransit services will operate on Monday, July 3, and resume regular schedules on Wednesday, July 5.
Passengers may take advantage of AATA’s Holiday Ride shared-ride taxi service on July 4 for $3 a person. Seniors and persons with disabilities with an AATA identification card may ride for $1.50.
The Holiday Ride taxi service operates only within the city limits of Ann Arbor. To schedule a Holiday Ride trip, call at 734/528-5432.
University Parking
Parking enforcement will be suspended for permits and meter fees in most U-M parking lots and structures for the Independence Day holiday (Tuesday, July 4). Exceptions are:
the Simpson Circle Drive Structure (also called the Mott Structure or M22 on East Medical Center Drive), the North Entrance Structure (also called the Cancer Center/Geriatric Center Structure or M15 on West Medical Center Drive), which will maintain regular 24-hour operations, and all special-signed spaces throughout campus (Gold, U-M Service Vehicle, Commercial Vehicle and Handicap), which will continue to require the appropriate permit.
Patient/visitor parking at the Palmer Drive Structure (N26) and Parking B at the North Entrance Structure will be closed on Independence Day (Tuesday, July 4). Parking A at the Taubman Structure (M18) will remain open with normal operations.
Please be aware that this announcement does not pertain to city of Ann Arbor structures or meters. Regular campus parking enforcement will resume at 6 am on Wednesday (July 5).
For more information about U-M transportation and parking services, please visit www.pts.umich.edu or call 734/764-8291. For information about AATA services, please view www.theride.org or call 734/996-0400.
Uniqnames and network access for new students
By the time students arrive they should already have their uniqname and their Basic Computing Package (e-mail, IFS Home Directory, UM Online Directory entry...) set up. This is done by the students themselves at the time they've been accepted and paid their deposit (described below in "Steps in acquiring a uniqname..."). With this, they can:
1) sit down in the Campus Computing Site and use the computers there, including printing
2) access the UM Wireless Network in the building using their laptops. They may need some info from us if they haven't used wireless networks that require some authentication -- once they connect they first need to start their Internet browser, and log in to the UM web page that comes up automatically, before they can use the Internet.
3) log into any of the College lab machines (Design Studio, BET Lab...)
The only thing they need to see us for is access to the building's wired network (e.g. the ethernet network up in the Design Studio) and that is usually something covered during the orientation.
Students may, of course, have other questions about computing and can certainly be referred to the Help Desk (caup.help.desk@umich.edu), this is just to answer the most common questions we have gotten so far.
From the ITCS Accouts Office -- Steps in acquiring a uniqname and Basic Computing Package for new students
1) Students begin with a "Friend" account during the application process
2) Once accepted and their deposit is received, e-mail that contains an OTID (one-time identifier) is sent out, generally within 48 hours. This, plus their UMID, is used on a site like this:
<http://www.itd.umich.edu/uniqname/>
to create a uniqname.
3) At the same time the uniqname is created, a student's Basic Computing Package is also set up, so they should arrive with everything already done.
The biggest problem that the Accounts Office has run into so far is that some students don't receive the mail with the OTID. Hotmail, for example, will periodically block mail from umich (umich mail servers occasionally show up on spam lists). Students with this problem who bring up the web page above will see a "Need Help" box that directs them to e-mail new.uniqname@umich.edu or call (734) 764-8000 and select Option 1.
