U-M bicyclists and pedestrians urged to use caution
A DPS Security Bulletin -- please share with your staff, faculty and student colleagues:
BICYCLISTS, PEDESTRIANS URGED TO USE CAUTION Bicyclists and pedestrians traveling through the West Hall arch are encouraged to use caution following an accident last Monday (Dec. 4). A student reported she sustained serious injuries when she walked into the arch from the West Hall door and was struck by a passing bicyclist. Reportedly the bicyclist did not stop after the incident. The sidewalk through the arch is quite narrow and all users should proceed with caution. Bicyclists are encouraged to walk their bicycles through the arch rather than ride them.
U-M FACILITIES SEASON DAY SERVICE
With the Christmas and Season Days break quickly approaching, the Facilities and Operations staff would like to remind you that we will maintain reduced staffing through the holidays to address any emergency situations. During the holidays, please call: - 911 for emergencies - 763-1131 to reach the Department of Public Safety to report a crime, safety concerns or spill response - 647-2059 to reach Plant Operations Call Center for physical plant maintenance requests.
ENERGY REDUCTION Please do your part to help conserve our utility consumption. Dial back room thermostats to 60 degrees in offices, classrooms and other areas that will not be used over the Thanksgiving weekend. Help make a positive impact on the environment and our budgets.
SAFETY AND CONSERVATION IMPACTS Throughout the U-M campus, we need your help in order to reduce emergencies and maintain a safe and secure environment. Please remind your staff and faculty colleagues and students to complete the following before they leave their work, research or living areas for the weekend: - close and lock all outside windows to prevent broken pipes and thefts; - secure valuables and lock offices, desks and closets; - properly attend to all fume hoods; - turn off all appliances, including computers, copiers, printers, coffee pots, space heaters, chargers and lights; and - make sure all chemicals are properly capped and research operations properly secured while unattended.

U.S. flags to half-staff Tuesday
Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today ordered that United States flags throughout the state of Michigan and on Michigan waters be lowered for one day on Tuesday (Dec. 5) in honor of Army National Guard Sergeant 1st Class James D. Priestap of Hardwood who died November 23 while on active duty in Iraq. Flags should return to full staff on Wednesday (Dec. 6). Sergeant Priestap, age 39, died from injuries suffered when he came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire during checkpoint operations in Baghdad, Iraq. He was assigned to the 46th Military Police Company, Kingsford, Michigan. When flown at half staff or half mast, the United States flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
Drop It! and Save It - Energy Reduction Campaign
Many of you will soon receive the next energy reduction posters -- Drop It! and Save It! These posters encourage each of us to drop our thermostats to 68 this winter and to save energy by turning off appliances, sharing refrigerators and using insulated carafes for coffee rather than hot plates. We encourage you to post the fliers in prominent locations and share the information below with your unit email groups. Please do what you can. Thank you. ********************* Message to the University Community: As many faculty and staff members prepare to leave campus for a few days during the holidays, we'd like to strongly encourage everyone to help reduce energy consumption while you are gone. Help make a positive impact on the environment and our budgets. The following checklist serves as a good reminder of actions each of us can take prior to leaving for the weekend or holiday break. Please feel free to share this list. * Lower thermostats to 60 degrees. * Close and lock all windows and doors -- external and internal. * Secure valuables and lock desks and closets. * Turn off all appliances, including computers, copiers, printers, coffee pots, chargers, space heaters and lights. * Properly attend to all fume hoods. * Draw blinds, shades and curtains. If you would like to request a temperature reduction in non-locally controlled rooms, please contact your facility manager. Thank you for helping to make a difference. And happy holidays! ******************** Richard W. Robben PE Executive Director of Plant Operations 326 E. Hoover St. Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1002 734 764 3400 ---
