Funded Research

By increasing our funded research base, we can augment our areas of scholarship and extend research experience and funding opportunities to students.

In pursuit of that goal, we will:

  • Re-establish the University of Michigan’s status as a leader in new structural paradigms, material research/development, and emergent/sustainable technology and design.
  • Expand research incentives, including student assistant support and increased faculty release time.
  • Establish and promote research initiatives.
  • Evaluate options for new research centers: We will explore the possibility of establishing one or more research centers to facilitate research funding, collaboration, exchange, and support. One leading contender is a Center for Real Estate and Metropolitan Development.
  • Improve reporting systems for funded research: Principal investigators need current, accurate and highly detailed information on account expenditures and funding levels. The University is currently developing systems that will assist in this regard. We will work with TCAUP staff to ensure that these new measures are implemented in ways that serve the needs of principal investigators on funded research projects.
  • Seek out research collaborations with relevant bodies on campus, such as the Center for the Study of Complex Systems, and other units such as the School of Information, Business School, Engineering, School of Natural Resources.
  • Increase student involvement in faculty research. Enhance informal student-faculty interaction around research issues, e.g., in student-organized “salons.”
  • Ensure that faculty and students have access to a high quality computing environment and laboratory space.
