  The Twelve Colleges
Designed by Domenico Trezzini, 1722–41; finished by D. Schwertfeger and B.C. Rastrelli. 400m long, the 12 connected buildings, combined into one long building along the backside, but with distinctive facades to each building on the front side, housed the 12 government ministries (kollegia, after the Swedish model of ministries run by committees, or "colleges") of Peter's government. Ironically, the building(s) became a part of St. Petersburg Imperial University in the nineteenth century, thus taking on the connotation of the English term "college." The trees to the right of the buildings occupy what was originally a canal with flanking streets, the canal now filled in.
