Jim Chaffers
The 2008 Ghana studio continues to evolve under the guidance of Professor of Architecture James Chaffers. Developed in collaboration with faculty and students at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (Kumasi) and the University of Ghana (Accra), the Ghana studio is organized as an interdisciplinary field experience for students of Architecture, Art & Design, Anthropology, Political Science, History, Diaspora studies, and other related majors. "Tapping the Power of African Sensibility: Examining the New/Old Challenge of Design Sustainability through a fusion of Western and West African Eyes" remains as the overarching thematic guide for spring '08 studio activities. To this end, West African 'field studies' focused on centuries-old Ghanaian expressions of practical beauty, tectonic resourcefulness, and design sustainability will serve to guide extended studio travels across the width and breadth of Ghana.
