joint/Dual degrees
Joint/dual degrees between the Master of Urban Design Program and the Architecture and Planning Programs (including the PhD) are encouraged for both applicants to TCAUP and current students. (Programs include Master of Architecture, Master of Urban Planning, and Masters of Science in Architecture.) Joint/dual degrees enable students to apply a limited number of academic credits across programs. For joint/dual degrees, prospective students apply separately to each of their choice of programs and are reviewed by the admissions committee for each program. An application fee is required for both programs. If an applicant does not hold a professional degree in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban planning, his or her admission to the MUD Program as a joint/dual degree student is contingent on acceptance to another TCAUP professional degree program. Only after such a joint/dual degree applicant is admitted to the other program, will an admissions decision be made by the MUD Program.
Applicants may also wish to wish to initiate joint/dual degrees between MUD and graduate programs in the School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE) that will require admissions and approval by TCAUP and SNRE.
Because the MUD Program is brief and intensive, joint/dual degree students should satisfy its course and studio sequence within two-and-one-half consecutive terms, i.e., summer, fall, and winter (with the option of spring-term international study to satisfy the Program’s elective).
Below are typical schedules for the most common dual degrees: M.Arch./MUD and MUP/MUD.
If an applicant is accepted to the M.Arch. 3G Option and MUD Programs, the suggested dual degree schedule is:
- Year 1 and 2: M.Arch. courses
- Year 3: MUD course and studio sequence
- Year 4: M.Arch. courses and thesis
This schedule provides the opportunity for the joint/dual degree candidate to address both architectural and urban-design issues in the M.Arch. thesis, if approved by the thesis committee.
An alternative to this schedule is to complete M.Arch. work during the third year, including thesis, and to add one year of study for MUD.
If an applicant is accepted to the M.Arch. 2G Option and MUD Programs, the suggested dual degree schedule is:
- Year 1: M.Arch. courses
- Year 2: MUD course and studio sequence
- Year 3: M.Arch. courses and thesis.
This schedule provides the opportunity for the dual-degree candidate to address both architectural and urban-design issues in the M.Arch. thesis, if approved by the thesis committee.
An alternative to this schedule is to complete M.Arch. courses during the second year, including thesis, and to add one year of study for MUD.
If an applicant is accepted to both the MUP and MUD Programs, the suggested dual degree schedule is:
- Years 1 and 2: MUP courses with urban-design concentration
- Year 3: MUD course and studio sequence.
If the MUP/MUD student already holds a professional degree in architecture or landscape architecture, s/he may take the MUD sequence of courses and studios in either the first, second, or third year of study. In exceptional cases, a MUP/MUD student holding a professional degree in architecture or landscape architecture can satisfy requirements for both programs within two years by enrolling for two spring terms and two summer terms in addition to two fall terms and two winter terms. In such cases, the MUD course and studio sequence would be taken in either the first or second year of study. (Please consult MUP and MUD faculty advisors for this option.)
