New Faculty, Courses, and More

Faculty

June Thomas: June will begin her appointment at Michigan Urban Planning in September 2007. She will teach a course entitled Center-City Planning and Community Development (UP656). In winter she will teach Urban and Regional Theory (UP573).

Lecturers: Returning in the Fall (pending final details from the Lecturers'
Employees' Organization) will be Fernando Caetano teaching Negotiation and Dispute Resolution (UP614); Julie Steiff teaching the writing component of UP513, Legal Aspects of the Planning Process; Rob Cory co-teaching UP566, Structuring Real Estate Financial Deals; and Susan Zielinski teaching Transportation and Public Policy, UP671. Phil D'Anieri will be the instructor for the undergraduate Introduction to Urban and Environmental Planning, UP423.

Courses

Expanded Horizons: Expanded Horizons will be visiting Minneapolis this year, September 26-30. Eric Beckett is heading the student organizing committee, and Joe Grengs will be advising the group on their visit to his old stomping grounds.

New Winter Courses: David Thacher, back from a sabbatical year in New York City, will be teaching a new course in the Winter semester entitled The Social Life of Public Spaces." The course will bring together a wide range of literature in sociology, law, design, and philosophy that bears on the problem of creating and maintaining vibrant public spaces (including classic authors such as Erving Goffman and Jane Jacobs and contemporary work such as Mitchell Duneier's Sidewalk and Thomas Nagel's Concealment and Exposure). The course will be relevant to a wide range of students in the Taubman College.

Gavin Shatkin and Architecture faculty Fernando Lara will be teaching a new course in the winter on slums and squatter settlements worldwide. They jointly received funding from the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching to develop this course, which promises to be a model for joint coursework in which planning and architecture students and faculty can learn from each other.
